Jun LU,  PhD.

Registered Psychotherapist (qualifying)

3-Year Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program -

Doctor of Philosophy - York University

Welcome, I’m Jun Lu—a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and psychoanalytic therapist based in Toronto. My path into psychotherapy began with a deep engagement with psychoanalytic theory, which I explored through doctoral research and continued through clinical training at the Toronto Psychoanalytic Institute and the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis. I work with individuals and couples who are navigating emotional difficulties, relationship struggles, identity questions, and the impact of past experiences. My approach is grounded in the belief that therapy is not just about managing symptoms, but about understanding the whole person—their inner world, history, and unique way of being. In our work together, I offer a thoughtful and attentive space where deeper patterns can come into view, and lasting change can begin to take root.

As someone who grew up within an East Asian cultural context and later pursued academic and clinical training in Canada, I bring a lived understanding of the tensions and richness that come with crossing cultural, linguistic, and generational boundaries. I’m especially attuned to the quiet forms of struggle that often affect members of the Asian diaspora, graduate students, researchers, and LGBTQ individuals—feelings of not belonging, pressure to achieve, identity conflict, and the burden of unspoken expectations. My practice offers a space to explore these complexities without judgment. I welcome those who find themselves caught between worlds, seeking to make sense of their inner lives in the midst of transition, silence, or contradiction.

Welcome to My Practice

Starting therapy is a meaningful step. I offer a thoughtful and supportive space to explore what lies beneath the surface—how past experiences, relationships, and unspoken feelings may be shaping your present. Rooted in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, my approach invites deeper understanding and lasting emotional change.

Fee/Insurance

In Ontario, OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) does not cover the cost of psychotherapy services. If you have private health insurance or employee benefits that include mental health coverage, I will provide an invoice after each session. You can then submit it to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Coverage varies depending on the specific insurance plan—some plans reimburse all or part of the psychotherapy fees, while others may not provide coverage. I recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to confirm whether your plan covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (qualifying).

Individual Therapy

  • I provide a confidential and supportive environment for individual therapy.

  • You are encouraged to explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences at your own pace.

  • We use a psychoanalytic approach to understand the underlying patterns that shape your life.

  • These patterns often originate in early relationships, family dynamics, and past traumatic experiences.

  • Early experiences—especially those that are painful or overwhelming—can unconsciously influence how we relate to others, cope with challenges, and move through the world.

  • Therapy creates space to explore these influences with compassion and curiosity.

  • This process supports trauma processing, deepens self-awareness, and enables meaningful and lasting change.

Couple Therapy

  • I provide a respectful and safe space where both partners can be heard, understood, and supported.

  • Couple therapy offers an opportunity to explore the dynamics of your relationship in depth—both the strengths and the areas of struggle.

  • Using a psychoanalytic lens, we look beneath surface conflicts to uncover the emotional patterns, unconscious expectations, and early relational experiences that may be shaping your current interactions.

  • Many couples find that unresolved individual histories and unmet needs can silently influence how they communicate, connect, or disconnect.

  • Together, we work to make these patterns more visible and understandable, allowing space for new ways of relating to emerge.

  • This process can deepen mutual understanding, foster emotional intimacy, and support more honest, connected, and resilient relationships.
